Nova Bus attracts 1st companion industry

PLATTSBURGH — A company that will work with Nova Bus expects to bring up to 60 jobs to Plattsburgh within five years.

SpencerARL New York has a contract to do sub-assembly work and another contract to provide third-party logistics services for the Nova Bus transit bus assembly plant being built on Banker Road in the Town of Plattsburgh.

STARTING WITH 17

SpencerARL Director of Business Development Randy Cebulski said 17 employees will be on staff when work starts. That figure could grow to as many as 60, he said, based on the success Nova Bus has in getting contracts for buses.

He said the company is choosing an agency now to conduct its hiring process.

Nova Bus plans to start production in March and hopes to produce two buses a day by September.

MATERIALS, ASSEMBLY

SpencerARL will handle all the materials coming in for Nova Bus from throughout North America. It will also handle about 150 minor sub-assembly operations that will go into 48 major sub-assemblies it will perform.

Those include bus engines, transmissions, axles, seats, wheels and tires.

They will be assembled at SpencerARL and shipped to Nova Bus on a just-in-time basis. That allows Nova Bus to reduce the amount of warehouse and storage space at the facility.

This is SpencerARL's first contract with Nova Bus, Cebulski said. The company does have experience in this type of business through its work with auto manufacturers.

'PERFECT LOCATION'

In a news release, the Development Corp. stated SpencerARL has signed a 5½-year lease, effective Jan. 1, for 42,088 square feet of space in Suite 100 at 3 Area Development Drive in Air Industrial Park.

Katharine Mulligan, marketing and business development director of The Development Corp., said the building is a top-notch facility.

"The facility's layout and proximity to Route 3 and Military Turnpike made it a perfect location to accommodate Nova Bus's just-in-time needs on a daily basis," she said.
