Forum to focus on keeping young professionals

PLATTSBURGH — The Adirondack Young Professionals’ Economic Forum on Thursday will focus on key issues faced by that demographic.

The topic is “How can we attract and retain young professionals through career development, business expansion and cultural advancement?”

The panel this year features Kim Manion of the North Country Small-Business Development Center; Terry Meron, local proprietor of local businesses, including Comfort Inn & Suites, Legends Bistro, Eclipse Fitness and Perkins; David Coryer of ETS; Plattsburgh Town Supervisor Bernie Bassett; Dr. Colin Read, a professor at SUNY Plattsburgh and co-owner of Champlain Wine Company; and Paul DeDominicas, director of the Center for Community & Workforce Development at Clinton Community College.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for the younger population to raise awareness of key concerns and topics in our community,” Young Professionals Civic Committee Co-Chair and board member Leigh Simonette said in a press release.

Locating in the North Country puts limitations on young professionals, the release said. Discussing them at the forum “will begin a long-lasting dialogue between the community leaders and the (younger group,) which, in turn, will help the area attract and retain (them).”

The sixth-annual event, sponsored this year by Mold Rite Plastics, is open to all. It takes place at Olive Ridley’s, 37 Court St. in Plattsburgh. The doors open at 5 p.m., with the forum set for 5:45 p.m.

A light fare and cash bar will be offered to guests; the group will accept donations to help fund projects it undertakes to strengthen and enhance the community.

Adirondack Young Professionals is a 501C3 corporation dedicated to creating opportunities to enable young working people to better network, socialize and serve the greater Adirondack community.
