PLATTSBURGH — A Plattsburgh man was arrested on felony sex abuse charges for allegedly touching a woman inappropriately as she slept.
In the early morning of Dec. 10, Steven Beckwith, 21, walked the woman, an acquaintance, to her residence on Oak Street, said Plattsburgh City Police Chief Desmond Racicot.
The woman went to sleep in her bedroom, with Beckwith remaining on the couch in the living room, Racicot said.
At about 12:10 a.m., the alleged victim awoke as Beckwith was touching her inappropriately, he said. She screamed and punched him, threatening to call 911 if he didn’t leave, the chief said.
Beckwith left, and the woman called police, Racicot said.
He was arrested by Plattsburgh City Police on Pine Street in Plattsburgh shortly after noon Dec. 12.
Beckwith was charged with first-degree sexual abuse of a physically helpless person, a felony, and forcible touching, a misdemeanor.
He was arraigned in Plattsburgh City Court and taken to Clinton County Jail.
Beckwith posted $2,500 cash bail, according to the Clinton County Sheriff’s Department.
Beckwith’s court date was not available Saturday.
