---- — BANGOR — A fire destroyed a single-family home here Sunday morning.

Bangor Volunteer Fire Department was notified of the blaze at 2600 Route 11B at 6:09 a.m. and arrived to find the structure, owned by Alain Choiniere, fully involved.

There were “flames coming out of the back side,” Bangor Fire Chief Jerry Dumas said.

One firefighter on scene suffered symptoms of general illness and was transported to Alice Hyde Medical Center; the individual was evaluated and released, according to Dumas.

Choiniere was out of town when the flames broke out, and no one was in the home. The fire was reported by a passerby.

Dumas said firefighters initially tried to attack the blaze from the interior of the two-story, wood-frame structure but were unable to continue because of the progression of the fire.

Instead, crews switched to a defensive approach, battling the flames from the exterior of the home.

Mutual aid was received from Malone Callfiremen, Brushton and Moira volunteer fire departments, Franklin County Fire Police, Franklin County Cause and Origin Team, and Franklin County Rehab Team and Northern Ambulance.

The coordination of the responding agencies, Dumas said, “was fantastic” and resulted in safe operations.

The Bangor Fire Department was back in service by 1:40 p.m.

The chief said Sunday afternoon that he did not believe the cause of the fire to be suspicious and thought it to be electrical in nature; though, he had not yet received a final report from the Cause and Origin Team.

Dumas was not certain if the home was insured.

On Dec.26, 2011, a barn located at 2712 Route 11B and belonging to Choiniere and his son, Andre Choiniere, was also destroyed by flames, resulting in the death of more than 100 of the men’s cattle.

Shortly after, it was reported that the fire to the barn was believed to be of suspicious origin.

No further information was available Sunday.
