PLATTSBURGH — The Butcher Block restaurant’s new banquet facility has added depth to the local celebration scene.
“There are not a lot of banquet facilities in town,” Butcher Block General Manager Kevin Kilkeary said.
The Adirondack Room, which opened at the start of October, can seat 150 to 160 people, with a patio for additional seating when weather permits.
The room has an Adirondack style to its decor but in a more formal setting than the restaurant. Two walls feature solid pine paneling, and even the floor has a wood-like appearance.
Two large dormers contain banks of windows that allow for plenty of natural light. There is a combination of track and drop-down lighting.
The Adirondack Room has a full kitchen and bar and two sets of restrooms. The main room and patio both feature gas-powered brick fireplaces.
The room can be accessed by entrances near the patio and from the Butcher Block.
Kristen Castro is the Adirondack Room’s banquet coordinator. Kilkeary said they have hosted six events so far and have 10 scheduled for November and December.
“We have weddings booked for next year already,” he said.
While they are running the room with Butcher Block’s current staff at present, Kilkeary said they will probably hire about 10 more people.
“I’ve got a great staff here,” he said of the Butcher Block, which has been a Plattsburgh mainstay for 37 years.
“We have a well-established clientele.”
He said they have always had numerous requests to host large parties for 100 or more people, but their largest private room had space for only 30 people. The new kitchen will also allow the restaurant to offer off-site catering.
The project involved clearing the grounds to the west and north of the lot. That created space for tented outdoor events in the warmer months.
The Adirondack Room will host a pair of special events this month. The Plattsburgh Bridal Show is scheduled for today and a dinner mystery theater production of “Gone to the Dog” is set for Nov. 17.
Kilkeary said he’s been working to build the room for about five years. The Town of Plattsburgh Planning Board approved the plan in September 2011.
Leon L. Blair was the general contractor. Kilkeary said they used local subcontractors for all the work except the architectural plans.
The Butcher Block is owned and operated by Albany-based White Management Group, which also owns Bountiful Bread, Creo and Mangia in the Albany area and the Log Jam in Lake George.
White Management is also involved in the Kentucky Fried Chicken, stand-alone Taco Bell and Dunkin’ Donuts restaurants in the Plattsburgh area.
