Press-Republican wins Publishers Association awards

ALBANY — The Press-Republican received four awards in the New York News Publishers Association 2012-13 Awards for Excellence contest.

The contest honors “newspapers and their staff members for their hard work and service to the art of newspaper journalism, photography and production,” Donna Donovan, recently retired publisher of the Observer-Dispatch in Utica, said Wednesday at an awards banquet in Albany before presenting the awards.

“These awards for excellence are a testament to the dedication of newspaper professionals to the highest ideals of the industry.”

BEST COMMUNITY SERVICE, MULTI-MEDIA

Staff Writer Felicia Krieg and Staff Photographer Rob Fountain were honored in both the Community Service and Multi-Media Presentation categories for “After Dark, Use Headlights and Your Head.”

Told in the first person, the winning entry profiles an experiment where Krieg and Fountain collaborated with the Collision Reconstruction Unit of the State Police at the Troop B headquarters in Ray Brook.

The Jan. 6, 2013, articles, photographs and video showed how wearing reflective clothing significantly improves stopping times for drivers who spot someone in their path while traveling at night on unlit roads.

Fatal car accidents involving pedestrians and bikers prompted the Press-Republican to request State Police’s help with the experiment.

Fountain’s video puts the viewer in the backseat of the test vehicle, driven by Krieg, with the results close to statistics used by State Police.

The demonstration showed how easily car accidents can happen at night.

When the test-drive speed was converted to a 55-mph driving speed or higher, the results showed Krieg would not have been able to stop the car before reaching a trooper posing as a pedestrian wearing dark-colored clothing.
