PLATTSBURGH — Police don’t know yet how SUNY Plattsburgh student Kodi Kadeem Beckles died.
Beckles, a junior criminal-justice major from Poughkeepsie, was found dead Monday morning just inside the woodline behind Knight Automotive on Route 3.
An autopsy was performed Tuesday by Forensic Pathologist Dr. Michael Sikirica at Albany Medical Center. While it positively identified Beckles, Sikirica did not assign a cause of death, pending further investigation and toxicology-test results.
State Police have said there was no indication of foul play.
The 20-year-old had last been seen early Saturday morning after leaving an off-campus party.
A search by area police, students and other campus staff ensued starting Saturday night after Beckles missed a meeting that people who knew him said he would surely have attended. Concern was voiced because he has epilepsy and friends feared a medical emergency.
The death shocked the campus and community.
A large crowd turned out Tuesday night for a vigil in Beckles’s memory at the Memorial Hall gym on Rugar Street.
SUNY Plattsburgh has counseling available for students at the college’s health center; call 564-3086.
Plattsburgh City Police (563-3411), State Police (565-3761) and SUNY Plattsburgh Police (564-2022) continue to investigate and ask people who might have information to contact them.
City Police Capt. Michael Branch said Tuesday that officers talked with a large number of people Sunday when the search for Beckles was underway.
Now police are going back to get signed depositions from people who saw him in his final days and are making sure all possible surveillance video is reviewed.
“Then we will know what is valuable to the investigation and what isn’t,” Branch said.
