PLATTSBURGH — The boy who never grows up flies through the air with the greatest of ease in “Peter Pan Flies Over the Ice” presented by the Skating Club of the Adirondacks.
On Saturday, skaters bring Never Land to ice with live music by Benjamin Bright and the Saranac High School Jazz Ensemble in the Plattsburgh State Field House.
“We have about 75 little kids in this show,” said skating pro Gayle Roy Collin. “We have the jazz band playing with us and a couple of guest vocalists. Ben Bright will be singing. Three of our skaters are also singing. That will be an interesting little turn to this.”
As always, the Skating Club changed up the plot.
“With our show, John, Michael and Wendy get captured by Captain Hook,” Collin said. “The Lost Boys rescue them and bring them to the Lost Boys’ house to meet Peter Pan, Peter Pan’s Shadow and Tinker Bell. We do have some live-audience participation in the show this year. We’ve never done that before, and the kids are excited about it.”
It was a decade ago when the club last tackled an adaptation of J.M. Barrie’s classic tale.
“But we didn’t have the same plot,” Collin said. “We started in January right after Christmas break. I started preparations in the summertime. The kids start rehearsing the first week of February; the kids have worked really hard.”
SETTING THE STAGE
On Wednesday evening, the club was setting the stage for fairy-dust escapades.
“We just finished painting the ice,” Collin said. “It’s all different colors. I free-handed Tinker Bell. There is a map of Never Land. We have the logo for Peter Pan.”
The cast includes Peter Pan (Bryanna Garrand), Tinker Bell (Abigail Breyette), Captain Hook (Meghan Germain), Wendy Darling (Jenna Worley), John Darling (Santana Vincencio LaBarre), Peter Pan’s Shadow (Ella Messner), Mr. Smee (Saana Teittinen-Gordon) and Michael Darling (Rachael Woodruff).
