Sex offender charged with violating registration act

PLATTSBURGH — A Plattsburgh sex offender was charged with violating the New York State Sex Offender Registration Act.

Steven D. Beckwith, 22, moved multiple times from the City of Plattsburgh without notifying authorities, as required by law, said Plattsburgh City Police Lt. Scott Beebie.

The moves started in August 2013, and at least one was to Suffolk County, he said.

Beckwith was charged with a Sex Offender Registry violation, a felony, and was arraigned in Plattsburgh City Court.

He was brought to Clinton County Jail on Feb. 7 and released on $500 cash bail that day, according to the Clinton County Sheriff’s Department.

Beckwith is a Level 1 sex offender, Plattsburgh City Police said.

The state designates Level 1 offenders as having the lowest risk of repeat offense; their addresses are not available to the public on the State Sex Offender Registry website.
