Plattsburgh launches town history blog

PLATTSBURGH — The Town of Plattsburgh has launched its own history blog.

Town Historian Jerry Bates said blogs are expected to be posted every two weeks or so.

Most will focus on people, places and events from the many hamlets and neighborhoods that make up the town, places such as Cumberland Head, Wallace Hill, Morrisonville, South Plattsburgh, Cliff Haven and long-gone spots such as Elsinore and Janesborough.

“It’s a series of blogs written by local people with an interest in our history,” he said.

Bates said he hopes that the new interactive blog can fill in some lesser-known details about the town and its inhabitants.

“We have an overall history of the town, but this is an opportunity to get more detailed, personal and specific,” he said.

Town Supervisor Bernie Bassett said the project is another example of Bates’s passion for the history of the town.

“We thank him for the hard work he has put in to pull together this blog focused on the history of the Town of Plattsburgh,” he said.

Bassett said the town has committed to the effort for a year, after which its success will be evaluated.

The series of authored blogs is scheduled to start Wednesday, March 12, with “We Missed the Cadyville Train,” by Joe Provost. It is about the railroad that passed through Cadyville and linked the City of Plattsburgh with Dannemora.

“I would very much like people, as they read it and get stimulated, to respond with their own stories that may have been handed down from their families,” Bates said.
