Police: Crown Point man beat friends with shotgun

---- — CROWN POINT — A Crown Point man was charged with a felony and several misdemeanors after he allegedly choked a friend and assaulted her and others with a weapon.

Cole M. Brooks, 19, has also been charged with second-degree rape, according to the Essex County District Attorney’s Office.

In connection with an alleged Feb. 6 fight, Brooks was charged with first-degree unlawful imprisonment, a felony, and a number of misdemeanors: four counts of second-degree menacing, three counts of third-degree assault, second-degree harassment, criminal obstruction of breathing and endangering the welfare of a child.

The dispute, reported just after 1 a.m. on Feb. 6, originated with an argument, and alcohol was a factor, State Police Troop B Public Information Officer Trooper Jennifer Fleishman said Thursday, but no further details were available as to the nature of the incident.

While no one was shot, Brooks did fire his Remington 870 12-gauge shotgun seven times in the driveway of the Pearl Street residence and threatened to shoot the four others, Fleishman said.

He assaulted three people, one of whom was a 14-year-old girl, who was choked and struck in the face, Fleishman said.

Brooks also allegedly struck a 19-year-old woman in the face with the butt of the shotgun.

An 18-year-old man who was trying to break up the fight sustained bite and scratch marks from Brooks, who also struck the man in the chest with the shotgun, Fleishman said.

The first officers to arrive were from the Ticonderoga Police Department, who arrested Brooks and took him to Moses-Ludington Hospital in Ticonderoga for treatment of injuries he sustained while struggling with the 18-year-old male.

It was unknown whether the other people required any medical attention.

Brooks was arraigned in Ticonderoga Town Court and was sent to the Essex County Jail in lieu of $5,000 cash or $10,000 bond.

He remained in jail Thursday.
