Governor’s Winter Challenge is on for Sunday

LAKE PLACID — The Adirondack Winter Challenge, postponed in February due to a winter storm, will now be held this Sunday, March 9.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo and a few busloads of state officials will arrive in Lake Placid about noon.

They have planned some friendly competition at local winter sport venues, with bobsled racing; Alpine skiing at Whiteface; Nordic skiing at Mount Van Hoevenburg; and hockey, speed skating and curling in the Olympic Center.

The competition will end with awards.

Essex County and town officials have teams ready, aiming to win with a home-court advantage.

Events are not open for the public to compete, but folks in Lake Placid may catch pieces of the action as various state and local officials travel from one Olympic venue to another.

Sponsors donate to send 3 Nicaraguan siblings to school

PLATTSBURGH — Three more Nicaraguan children now have education sponsors through North Country Mission of Hope.

The sister of the youngsters, whose name is Xochitl, started school thanks to a donor last week, when Mission of Hope was in the country completing a week of projects aiding the poor.

As the 10-year-old thanked Sister Debbie Blow, executive director of the group, the child also asked for help for her siblings.

A story in the Press-Republican on Tuesday prompted sponsors to step up, Blow said, and Jard, Sara and Melvin will now be enrolled.

Mission of Hope sponsors pay the $140 annual cost for hundreds of children in Nicaragua to attend school; that amount also provides clothes, shoes and a daily multivitamin.

Donations can be sent to the organization at North Country Mission of Hope, P.O. Box 2522, Plattsburgh, NY 12901.
