Lookback: June 11-17

25 YEARS AGO — 1987

Malone’s Tru-Stitch Footwear company, which has recently been rumored to be on it’s way to closing, has announced that the company will now be producing closed-toe footwear. The necessary equipment is being sent from a Tru-Stitch branch in Maine.

WCFE Channel 57’s fundraiser Action Auction was a huge success, raking in $46,000 by selling off general merchandise, gift certificates, and vacation packages. The fundraiser lasted a week and the channel exceeded it’s goal.

This week’s 30-minute power outage was caused by a lightning strike at the Kent Falls Substation. The black out stretched from Point au Roche to Peru and from Plattsburgh to Dannemora.

▶ The Chazy Central Board of Education and the Teachers of said school have finally come to a compromise after over a year of negotiations and have formed a new five-year contract. The teachers will be receiving annual pay raises of 9, 7, 9, 9 and 8 percent in the term of the contract.

50 YEARS AGO — 1962

Tramit Hosiery Mill is one of many pilot plants that have recently popped up in Plattsburgh, and business is booming. The mill, which ships 2,000 dozens packages to New York City a week, is looking to increase its work force.

Everett William Vogan Jr., 14, of Plattsburgh drowned after suffering from an epileptic seizure and falling into 30 feet of water while boating near the Saranac Inn.

Arthur LaSalle, 13, returned home after being considered a missing child for a total of one day. The sixth-grade boy had skipped school and biked to his aunts in West Chazy for a visit without notifying anyone. He arrived at his home as neighbors and police were out searching for him.

75 YEARS AGO — 1937

Rouses Point’s power plant was one of 24 in New York ordered by the state to reduce electric rates immediately. “Reports submitted by the municipalities,” said the Public Service Commission, “show that many of the publicly owned plants are making excessive rates of return.”
