Half & Half Lecture Series returns

CHAZY — The Half & Half Lecture Series, featuring two speakers and two unrelated topics in the same hour, returns to Alice T. Miner Museum this month.

At the first lecture of the season, set for 7 p.m. Thursday, June 13, Clinton County Historian Anastasia Pratt and SUNY Plattsburgh professor Gary Kroll will give presentations.

“Both speakers will present unrelated topics, but the fun part is connecting the topics with the audience,” said Amanda Palmer, director and curator for the museum.

“Sometimes connections are made; sometimes they’re not.”

Pratt will analyze rural life through such varied resources as photographs, movie stills, popular fiction and Internet games.

Kroll will examine the impact human traffic has had on animal populations, as scientists and engineers have tried to understand and reduce animal-vehicle collisions.

“I’ve been working with these two speakers for quite awhile, trying to get their schedules to mesh,” Palmer said of the process to bring the series back to Miner Museum. “Putting these two topics together happened mainly by chance.”

The format is simple: One speaker offers the first half-hour presentation, followed immediately by the second presenter. Participants can ask questions of both speakers after they have finished.

“We’ve had some lengthy discussions (during past presentations),” Palmer said. “Hopefully, the audience has an equal amount of questions for each speaker.”

Palmer first brought the concept of the series to the museum in 2009 when local author Kate Messner spoke on one of her projects and SUNY Plattsburgh professor Wendy Gordon discussed her research in women’s studies.

“We did quite a few (lectures) those first few years,” Palmer said. “We put together as many pairs as we could early on.”

The series was put on hold a few years ago, however, as Palmer and the museum concentrated on a major exhibit for the late Dr. George Clark, a family physician in Chazy for many years.
