Peru looks to add speed limits in two areas

PERU — Town of Peru officials are asking the state to reduce the speed limits in two locations.

The Town Council approved a pair of resolutions recently that allow Town Supervisor Peter Glushko to submit requests to the New York State Department of Transportation to reduce the speed limit on Brand Hollow Road from Military Turnpike to Route 22 and on Henry Sr. Drive, including Korn Drive.

“This is a request from the citizens” living in the area of focus on Brand Hollow Road, Glushko said, noting that the road is not posted between Military Turnpike and Route 22 and therefore has a 55-mph speed limit.

In order for the town to post any roadways for reduced speed limits, officials have to follow a specific process that includes filing a change-in-speed-limit request with the Clinton County Highway Department superintendent.

The New York State Department of Transportation will then review the request and either approve or deny the speed-limit adjustment, depending on its findings.

In 2011, Sen. Betty Little introduced a bill that would allow small municipalities like Peru to establish their own speed limits on town roadways.

Municipalities with populations above 50,000 already are allowed to set their own laws.

The Senate passed the bill in 2012. It would require towns wanting to set maximum speed limits do so in accordance with standards already set forth by New York state.

Changes would have to be certified by a licensed professional engineer specializing in traffic operations.

Towns not wanting to set their own speed limits could continue to retain DOT for oversight and approval.

The bill has been sent to the Assembly, which has forwarded it to DOT for background information before considering changes.

The Peru Town Council agreed unanimously to request the change in speed for Brand Hollow Road. A specific speed will be determined if approved.
