Seasonal camp in Mooers destroyed by fire

---- — MOOERS — A seasonal camp in Mooers was destroyed by fire Friday evening.

At 5:57 p.m., the Mooers Fire Department was called to an unmarked address near Scriver Road and Baker Lane.

“Access was a struggle. It was very difficult to find,” Mooers Fire Department First Assistant Chief Dan Dumas said.

The Fire Department had to navigate a seasonal dirt road to get to the camp, Dumas said.

“It (the road) kind of hindered our response.”

A passer-by called emergency authorities to report the blaze, Dumas said.

The approximately 20-by-30-foot camp couldn’t be saved by the time the department arrived and is a total loss, Dumas said.

The fire had likely been burning for between 30 and 45 minutes before the department got to the camp, which may have been used for hunting, the first assistant chief said.

He estimated the building was valued at $25,000.

As of Friday evening, the owner of the property had not been located.

“We are still working with State Police to try to ascertain that information,” Dumas said.

The cause of the fire did not appear to be suspicious as of Friday evening, but was still under investigation, Dumas said.
