Police start criminal investigation into fatal accident

CHAMPLAIN — New York State Police are conducting a criminal investigation into the car crash that killed Ashley A. Poissant on Monday evening.

State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation Lt. Brent Davison could not say what type of charges may be filed, if any, nor would he provide many more details, saying that could compromise the investigation.

“There is a criminal investigation going on, along with the accident investigation, so many of the details cannot be released at this point,” he said.

NO CHARGES

He said that, as of Wednesday afternoon, no charges had been filed.

Police said the accident happened as Ronald R. Trombly, 85, of Mooers was driving a 2009 Buick westward near 58 Perry Mills Road.

He told police he saw four people running in the same direction along the north shoulder and tried to drive around them. Trombly said he was unable to avoid hitting Poissant, police said.

She was 27.

AUTOPSY RESULTS

Deputy Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Elizabeth Boondock conducted an autopsy Tuesday morning at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington, Davison said.

Boondock determined the cause of death to be a “skull-fracture brain injury due to blunt force impact.”

She ruled the manner of death accidental and due to Poissant being struck by a motor vehicle, the lieutenant said.

Conducting the criminal investigation are Chazy-based State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation Investigator Richard Hoff, the State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit and the Clinton County District Attorney’s Office.

District Attorney Andrew Wylie and U.S. Customs and Border Protection Border Patrol responded to the accident site Monday night.

JOGGING

Capt. Robert LaFountain confirmed Wednesday that Poissant and her three companions were jogging for recreation when the accident occurred.

Police said they were running “side by side” and that Poissant was hit “on or near the fog line,” which is the line that marks where the roadway meets the shoulder.
