Ice prompts Town of Jay State of Emergency

JAY — Significant icing on driveways and sidewalks prompted the Town of Jay to declare a five-day State of Emergency on Friday morning so private citizens can access sand from the municipality.

Sand — available to Town of Jay residents only — can be picked up at the Town of Jay Highway Garage on Valley Road between 6 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. through Tuesday, when the State of Emergency is slated to end.

“We, as a town, want to be sure that all of our residents have the ability to obtain the sand they need to maintain safe conditions for themselves and their neighbors,” Department of Public Works Director Director Chris Garrow said in a statement.

Residents must provide their own buckets or other receptacles for sand; no pickup-truck loads will be allowed.

“This State of Emergency is in the best interest of public safety for my constituents,” Town Supervisor Randy Douglas said. “I am asking you to please consider your neighbors, the elderly and the disabled and if possible spread sand on their driveways and sidewalks as well.”

The rain expected this weekend is expected to make conditions slicker,” he said.

“It’s better to be safe than sorry. I think we’re doing the right thing.”

Chamber Ski Day pushed back due to rain

MALONE — The North Country Chamber of Commerce Chamber Ski Day at Titus Mountain Family Ski Center has been moved from today to next Saturday, Jan. 18.

The rain forecasted for today had poured cold water on the function, according to a press release from the chamber. 

Next week’s event, set for 9:30 a.m. to midnight, offers lift tickets for adults priced at $30; for ages 5 through 12 and seniors 65 through 69 for $27.
