Schuyler Falls home destroyed by fire

SCHUYLER FALLS — No one was injured when fire destroyed a single-family home Tuesday night.

The home at 14 Daniels Way off of Military Turnpike is owned by Jerry Daniels, who lives next door at 30 Daniels Way. He said he rented the home to Moriah Cotter, who lived there with her son and daughter.

South Plattsburgh Fire Chief Jeff Santor said they received the call at 10:57 p.m. He said the family was home but evacuated safely after the fire broke out.

"There was heavy fire out of half of the house when we arrived," Santor said. "The home is a total loss."

Firefighters initially used an exterior attack, then moved inside once the flames were knocked down far enough to do so.

Santor said that while temperatures were quite cold, that didn't really hamper efforts to extinguish the blaze, but did require them to change crews more often as firefighters got too cold.

Daniels said he saw flames about 25-30 feet above the roof when he first came outside. Later, he saw fire crews ventilating that roof in order to get more water on the flames. Wednesday afternoon, the burned out structure showed heavy damage, with charred and melted siding. The entire interior was burned beyond repair.

Santor said a nearby garage and separate storage building were not in danger.

Mutual aid assistance came from the Peru, District 3, Morrisonville, Cumberland Head, Keeseville and City of Plattsburgh fire departments. South Plattsburgh was back in service by 1:52 a.m.

Daniels said Cotter was staying with her sister in the City of Plattsburgh.

He has insurance on the structure and will decide whether he will rebuild after he talks with his insurance provider.

Santor said the fire doesn't appear suspicious, but the investigation into the cause continues.
