PLATTSBURGH — The region has landed six professional bass tournaments for 2014.
The events, hosted by the City of Plattsburgh and the Adirondack Coast Visitors Bureau, start June 14 with the American Bass Anglers Weekend Bass Series. The last event, the Northern Bass Supply, is scheduled for Aug. 16.
The tournaments are expected to attract about 2,000 anglers to the region, as well as family members and tournament support staff. Some anglers make pre-tournament scouting visits or use the events as the centerpiece of an extended vacation.
Plattsburgh Mayor Jim Calnon said he is a big fan of the tournaments, as they help promote the lake and region and have a substantial economic impact.
A 2012 study showed that the bass fishing tournaments bring $8.2 million to the Adirondack Region annually.
In addition to the economic impact of the tournaments, ongoing media exposure and recognition worldwide from outlets such as ESPN and the Versus Network, reaching 90 million and 61 million households respectively, increases the potential for Clinton County, Lake Champlain and Plattsburgh to become synonymous with world-class fishing, organizers say.
“They also help expose the area to people who aren’t from here,” Calnon said. “When the magazines and television cover the events, it gives us broader exposure.”
North Country Chamber of Commerce Marketing Director Kristy Kennedy said its Adirondack Coast Visitors Bureau is pleased to announce such a strong schedule, especially the return of FLW and Bassmaster events.
This will be the 14th year the region has hosted an FLW event, while Bassmaster hasn’t been held on Lake Champlain since 2010.
The latter is put on by B.A.S.S., the world’s largest fishing organization. It sanctions more than 20,000 tournaments worldwide, and its Bassmaster Magazine listed Lake Champlain as the 16th best lake for bass fishing in the United States.
“I’m looking forward to having both organizations back on Lake Champlain this year,” she said.
Kennedy said the visiting anglers are always pleased with the reception and service they get while in Plattsburgh.
Examples include charging stations, washout stations and expanded check-in/check-out hours at several local hotels.
“We’re very lucky every year that the community comes out and is the best host we can have for these anglers,” she said.
