Basic STAR tax exemption deadline today

ALBANY — Today is the deadline to register for the Basic STAR property tax exemption.

The average homeowner saves $700 each year on their local school property tax bill as a result of the exemption, according to a press release from the State Tax Department. 

Those who register will continue to be eligible in 2014 and beyond. Senior citizens receiving the Enhanced STAR exemption are not affected by this registration program. 

Basic STAR is available on the primary residence of homeowners with annual incomes of less than $500,000.

Chazy Decorating Contest winners named

CHAZY — Marty and Julie Pombrio of 10 Washington Ave. won first place in the Best Decorated House category of the Chazy Holiday Decorating Contest.

They will receive a prize of $75 donated by Riley Ford.

Second place goes to Andy Hemingway of 25 Gonyea Road in the hamlet of Sciota, with a $50 prize donated by an “old friend” in memory of Donald “Bucket” Trombley, a longtime Chazy Town Council member.

Third place was won by Jody and Julie Boulrice of  438 Stratton Hill Road in West Chazy. Their $25 prize was provided by Sangers Sugar House.

Winner of the Best Decorated Business is Hair Styles Unlimited on Route 9, owned by Denise Garnot. That $25 award was donated by D&D Meats.

And the Best Decorated Tree, located at 137 Stratton Hill Road in West Chazy, belongs to  Lee and Kim Sanger. Randy Tetreault of Ameriprise donated the $25 prize.

Winners may pick up their prizes at the Chazy Town Hall. 

Plattsburgh Common Council to meet Thursday evening

PLATTSBURGH — The City of Plattsburgh Common Council will hold its first regular meeting of 2014 at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 2.

Agenda items include fire and ambulance reports for the period of Dec. 19 through Jan. 1; a Building Inspector’s Office report; and a request for two police officers to attend Evidence Room Management Training in Kingston Jan. 20 through 22 at a cost that would not exceed $952.
