Fundraiser planned for First Weekends

PLATTSBURGH — First Weekends activities have successfully drawn visitors to downtown Plattsburgh and launched a cultural renaissance there, organizers say, but keeping the ball rolling requires some funding.

An event set for 5 to 8 p.m. Friday aims to raise money for that purpose.

Lowell Wurster of the band Lucid will be guest bartender at Champlain Wine Company for the evening, with net profits and tips donated to First Weekends in Downtown Plattsburgh Inc.

“We are very excited to be partnering with a downtown business that has been part of First Weekends since our inception,” organization President Tim McCormick said in a press release.

First Weekends was introduced last June, with businesses offering specials and discounts, and street musicians and other entertainment encouraging visitors to downtown on the first Friday and Saturday of the month.

North Country Cultural Center for the Arts and the Strand Theatre are among organizations that take part; many performers donate their time to add to the fun.

“First Weekends has received a tremendous amount of support from the community,” McCormick said.

“However, as we grow, we find our expenses increasing, and in an effort to be able to provide free cultural activities in the future we must raise money in order to continue to grow.”

First Weekends, a nonprofit, will hold a fundraiser on the first weekend of each winter month, McCormick said.

To stage this Friday’s event at Champlain Wine Company, said First Weekends Vice President Leigh Simonette in the release, “was a perfect fit, to hold this event downtown to keep within our theme,”

All donations will help cover expenses to host future events for the 2014 season.

First Weekends will launch its initial downtown celebration of the year in April.
