Food pantry numbers on the rise

ELIZABETHTOWN — The Community Food Shelf here gave out about 20,000 pounds of food annually to those in need in 2010, 2011 and 2012.

And it is on track for about the same for this year.

Located in the Parish Hall of Church of Good Shepherd, it primarily serves families in the Elizabethtown, Lewis and New Russia areas, though at times it has reached out to other communities.

Food requests generally come from Essex County Social Services, Families First or ACAP.

This year, the Food Shelf distributed about 50 holiday baskets, according to Director Marilyn Jordan, up from 35 in 2012.

“This is the most we have ever done,” she said. “What we are finding is that we have a lot more single- and two-person households (in need). Most of these are elderly people.”

While Food Shelf organizers greatly appreciate actual food donations by individuals, monetary donations go a lot further, Jordan said.

She said most canned goods that run about $1.25 each in stores can be purchased by the Food Shelf for 16 cents.

And there are other ways to help, too, she said.

“We are always looking for volunteers.”

For more information, call the church at 873-2509. Donations may be sent to Community Food Shelf, P.O. Box 146, Elizabethtown, NY 12932.
