Celebrate the holidays on ice

Skating Club of Adirondacks presents 2013 Ice Show

PLATTSBURGH — Get a taste of ice magic before Sochi at Sunday’s 2013 Holiday Ice Show presented by the Skating Club of the Adirondacks.

The “Holiday Extravaganza” features an array of figure skaters from beginners to advanced whirling to holiday music such as “Holly, Jolly Christmas,” “Christmas Sarajevo” and “Jingle Bell Rock.”

“We’re going to have a show where, basically, the kids have choreographed their own duos with another skater,” said Gayle Roy-Collin, skating pro.

“There will be some duos and group numbers that the coaches have choreographed. It’s all holiday music that the kids have picked out. It’s their way of expressing their freedom of skating. During the big show, they have to do what I have to say. I let them do this, so they don’t take it out on me as much.”

Sunday’s hour-long program features 10 group numbers, three of which are advanced skaters. There will be performances to “Carol of the Bells,” “All I Want for Christmas is You” and “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree.”

The Plattsburgh High School Select Vocal Ensemble will open the show.

“I have choreographed one number to what they’re singing for the advanced skaters,” Roy-Collin said.

The ensemble will perform “Christmas Time is Here,” and the advanced skaters will perform to “Step Into Christmas” and “Sleigh Ride.”

“We celebrate the season with live-chorus music in the holiday tradition and the skaters perform what they feel about the holiday,” Roy-Collin said.

“There will be an open skate. Anyone showing up can bring their own skates or there will be skate rentals. That includes the audience for the open skate. That’s cool. It’s a way for the community to do something. It started out being really small and for the parents to come and celebrate the skating-club family. It kind of grew. Now, we have more community members come.”
