Man hit by car in critical condition

PLATTSBURGH — Michael A. Magee, badly injured in a car/pedestrian accident on Tuesday, remained in critical condition Thursday.

He was was more stable, however, Clinton County Sheriff David Favro said.

“I think they were hoping to start working on some of his injuries soon.”

The West Chazy man, 52, was crossing busy Smithfield Boulevard after dark, at about 4:50 p.m., when he was struck by a car in the left-hand northbound lane, just north of Ground Round restaurant, Favro said.

He was taken to CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh then transferred to Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington.

The driver of the car, Karen M. Brennan Bisso, 52, of Morrisonville, was treated then released from CVPH.

The accident remained under investigation on Thursday, Favro said. No tickets had been issued.

DETAILS UNCLEAR

Authorities weren’t entirely sure why Magee was crossing the road, Favro said.

“The only thing we can see is that he had just dropped his truck off for services and said he would be back in about an hour,” he said.

“We do not know if he was heading to the Ground Round for sure.

“(But) he was headed in that direction.”

Once Magee is well enough to speak with them, Favro said, they will likely be able to get a better picture of what happened.

‘MANY 911 CALLS’

About 30 people called 911 to report the accident, the sheriff said, adding that Clinton County Fire Control dispatchers did a great job handling the calls.

The Sheriff’s Department requested assistance from the State Police Collision Reconstruction Team and also firefighters with the Plattsburgh District 3 Volunteer Fire Department, who controlled traffic for several hours until authorities were finished taking measurements and photographs and collecting other evidence.

‘DARK CLOTHING’

Favro said Magee was wearing dark clothing.

Pedestrians often don’t realize how difficult it is for drivers to see them in the dark, he said.
