City to host fundraiser for Superstorm Sandy victims

PLATTSBURGH — The City of Plattsburgh Recreation Department will host Race the Base: a Charity Fun Run to Benefit the American Red Cross Hurricane Sandy Relief.

The event takes place at 5:30 p.m. Friday at the City Recreation Center on U.S. Oval.

Walkers and families with children and strollers are also encouraged to attend.

Registration starts at 4:30 p.m., and the recommended donation is $20, but any contribution is acceptable.

All participants, whether they walk or run, are required to use flashlights and/or headlamps. Special recognition will be given to those who run with the most lights on.

There are two options available for participants: a 1-mile lap around the oval or a 3-mile (three laps) option for runners. All proceeds will benefit the American Red Cross and the Hurricane Sandy Relief fund.

City Police and volunteers will aid in the safe passage of participants. Vehicle traffic will be temporarily restricted to “one way’ around the oval in the outside lane.

Participants are encouraged to preregister by going to the City of Plattsburgh Recreation Department Facebook page and “like” the Race the Base event. This will give organizers an idea of the size of the crowd expected to attend.

“Race the Base will be held in the evening and with flashlights shining the way for our runners,” City Superintendent of Recreation Steve Peters said in a press release.

“With accompanying donations, it’s a great way for the North Country to help give to the victims of the storm and to symbolically acknowledge the cold and dark conditions that our friends in New York and New Jersey are currently going through.

“Right now, funds that are designated for immediate use towards disaster relief will allow us to continue our massive effort in the wake of Sandy,” said Lynn Gilbert, executive director of the North Country Chapter of the Red Cross.
