SCHUYLER FALLS — A horse barn at 1546 Route 22B was destroyed by fire on Friday; no animals were in the building at the time, according to Morrisonville Volunteer Fire Department Fire Chief Kevin Randall.
His department got the call just after noon with automatic mutual aid from Cadyville Volunteer Fire Department and Morrisonville EMS. The blaze was under control in about 20 minutes, he said, with another hour or so on site to quench the flames. A 100-pound propane cylinder exploded in the midst of the effort, the chief said.
Route 22B was closed for about an hour and a half.
The property is owned by Franklin J. Akey, Randall said, and he has insurance on the 32-by-40-foot barn.
Also assisting at the fire were departments from Dannemora, Keeseville, Peru, Beekmantown, Plattsburgh District 3 and South Plattsburgh, along with Clinton County Emergency Services cars 5 and 6. Cumberland Head Volunteer Fire Department was standing by with an engine and crew at the Morrisonville station.
It appeared the fire had started in a rear portion of the two-story barn where a wood stove stood, Randall said, but the cause remained under investigation on Friday.
