PSU to showcase cultural diversity at GEO Expo

PLATTSBURGH — The inaugural GEO Expo will take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 27, in the Warren Ballrooms of SUNY Plattsburgh’s Angell College Center.

Hosted by the college’s Global Education Office, the event will be the biggest cultural event on campus this semester. It will feature food, drinks, music and presentations from countries around the world, displaying the cultural spirit of SUNY Plattsburgh.

“The GEO Expo is an event that celebrates the geographic diversity of our college community and introduces us to unfamiliar customs, food, languages and ideas,” said Jackie Girard Vogl, assistant vice president for global education.

“And I hope that all of the students who have devoted so much time and effort to making this even a success will be rewarded by seeing lots of people participate.”

The event will divide the Warren Ballrooms into different areas of the world, each with presentations from international students, students who have studied abroad and cultural clubs on campus. Employment, internships and other international opportunities will be showcased by the GEO staff.

On-campus clubs such as Korean Association, J-CAP, Chinese Association, Club Caribbean and African Unity will participate. SUNY Plattsburgh is home to students from more than 63 countries.

The public is invited to attend.

Deadline nears for some property-tax exemptions

CHAZY — All New York state real property tax exemption renewal and new applications must be completed and filed with assessors of municipalities by March 1.

Among exemptions that may need to be renewed, according to Town of Chazy Assessor Patricia Ayer, are: senior citizen 50 percent (age 65 or older); nonprofit; limited income and disability; and agricultural land.

Enhanced STAR for ages 65 or older may require renewal if the property owners do not file an income tax return and are not signed up with the Income Verification Program, she said in a press release.
