Hockey was on the minds of Olympians from the North Country at the Winter Games in Sochi, Russia.

From Nordic Combined athlete Billy Demong of Vermontville: “Pretty cool 2b watching @Sochi2014 hockey finals at an airport (krr) where there are no other Americans and the majority is for USA! ... Trying to board but Russian hockey fans are true fanatics!”

From ski jumper Peter Frenette of Saranac Lake: “The USA girls are the most bummed silver medalists of the games. But they played a great game. # keepyaheadup” and “Congrats @JamieGreubel #lakeplacid.”

Family and friends keep the support coming.

From Cindy Ackerman Hovland on the Friends of Peter Frenette Facebook page: “Be proud of your accomplishments. So many would love to be in your shoes and will never get close. Many more years ahead to grab that medal if that is what you choose to do,” and “Let’s not forget to watch the Sochi Paralympic Games which begin next week!”

Thirteen of 22 New York state athletes competing in the Winter Olympics in Sochi are from the North Country. They are: Lowell Bailey, Lake Placid, biathlon; Tim Burke, Paul Smiths, biathlon; Annelies Cooke, Saranac Lake, biathlon; Nicholas Cunningham, Lake Placid, bobsled; Billy Demong, Vermontville, Nordic combined; Peter Frenette, Saranac Lake, ski jumping; Jamie Greubel, Lake Placid, bobsled; Erin Hamlin, Lake Placid, luge; Andrew Weibrecht, Lake Placid, Alpine skiing; Chris Mazdzer, Saranac Lake, luge; Matthew Mortensen, Lake Placid, luge; Justin Olsen, Lake Placid, bobsled; and Jayson Terdiman, Lake Placid, luge.
