Police: West Chazy men charged with felonies after drug-related beating

PLATTSBURGH — Two West Chazy men were charged with felony assault and burglary after allegedly beating a Plattsburgh man in a dispute over drugs.

Early on Saturday, Feb. 15, Heith J. Duprey, 26, and Brad M. Aylward, 27, broke a window at 123 Cornelia St. in Plattsburgh and, once inside, beat Todd R. Bishop, 29, with a 2-to-3-foot wooden handle of a shovel, Plattsburgh City Police Lt. Scott Beebie told the Press-Republican.

At about 4:04 a.m., an unidentified person reported the assault to authorities, Beebie said, and officers found Bishop injured in the apartment.

He was taken to CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh for treatment of a fracture to his right cheekbone, an injury to his right eye and several severe facial cuts, City Police said in a news release.

Bishop has since been released from the hospital.

After assaulting Bishop, police said, Aylward and Duprey fled the apartment.

Aylward was apprehended Tuesday at the America’s Best Value Inn in Plattsburgh.

Officers found Duprey on Thursday at a residence in Keeseville.

The assault stemmed from a disagreement about the “purchase and distribution” of K2 in the area, police said. K2 is a type of synthetic marijuana.

Beebie said he could not elaborate on the details of that motive, as the investigation was continuing and other arrests were possible.

Both men were charged with first-degree burglary and second-degree assault, both felonies.

They were arraigned in Plattsburgh City Court and sent to Clinton County Jail, where they remained Friday in lieu of $20,000 cash or $40,000 bond.
