Youth program launches I'm a Ted Kid campaign

PLATTSBURGH — The Ted K. Center and SUNY Plattsburgh students have launched a campaign designed to shine a light on the center’s educational, social and recreational services.

“What we’re here to celebrate is the kids,” said Tom Neale, education coordinator at the Ted K. Center, located at 8 Tyrell Ave. in the Plattsburgh Housing Authority development.

The I’m a Ted Kid campaign, created by eight public-relations students for their capstone class, features a poster series of six children who attend the Ted K. Center.

As the posters were unveiled, each of the children presented the word they chose for their poster that best represented them. Choices included passion, ambition, determination, confidence and inspiration.

SHARING INTERESTS

Jasmine King, 12, has been going to the Ted K. Center — which serves children who live in Plattsburgh Housing developments — since she was 4 years old. Her word was optimism.

“It makes me feel happy and excited to come here each day,” she said in a speech she prepared for the campaign launch.

The quote included on her poster read, “The Ted K. Center teaches me to try new things and not to be afraid, while guiding me in the right direction.”

After her speech, King explained that once a week the center offers a dinner theater club, where she likes to sing and play clarinet.

“The people here are very nice to me, and they give me a lot of privileges,” she said.

King likes the new campaign.

“I think it’s really cool because everybody gets to know things I’ve grown up around,” she said. “They get to see how it impacts other people’s lives.”

YEAR-ROUND PROGRAMS

The Ted K. Center offers early childhood, after-school and summer programs, with daily activities that include homework completion, exercise, nutrition education, arts and crafts, gardening and much more.
