CHAZY — A bottle drive and book sale are the start toward Michael Moore’s plan to raise funds for Chazy Public Library.
Moore, 19, a student at Chazy Central Rural School, wanted to learn how to fundraise, so he set a target of $1,000 for his senior project.
The project, Moore explained, is about accomplishing goals.
“It’s to learn something new that you’ve never done,” he said.
To raise money for the library, Moore is working with his mentor, Chazy Public Library Trustees President Tina Trombly.
“We have a pretty good collection already,” Moore said about the bottle drive.
The local redemption center is working with him to collect bottles until the end of the school year in June.
Moore attended events at the library to get word out about the bottle drive and book sale, which was held last Saturday, but he’s still hoping for more donations.
The book sale garnered $280 toward his $1,000 goal.
“We probably sold seven boxes (of books),” Moore said. “We sold more children’s books than adult books.”
Though he was impressed with the number of books sold, he had been hoping to reach the halfway point of $500.
In addition to the book sale and bottle drive, Moore is also conducting a survey to determine how to bring high-school students into the library.
“I think it’s because of all the (electronic) devices that we have,” Moore said about why more students aren’t using the public library.
The survey asks students about their knowledge of the library and what sort of event would draw them there.
Moore noted that the library has other resources available, aside from books, that would be beneficial for students.
He guesses the best way to attract young adults would be with an event designed for them.
“From the (survey) results, we’re going to pick an event that teenagers would be willing to go to,” Moore said.
Moore has to dedicate at least 30 hours to his senior project to complete it.
“You have to do school and senior project work at the same time,” he said.
