Champlain woman struck and killed by car

CHAMPLAIN — A 27-year-old Champlain woman died after she was struck by a car Monday night as she ran along Perry Mills Road.

Ashley A. Poissant was taken to CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh in critical condition then transferred to Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington, where she died from her injuries.

State Police said Ronald R. Trombly, 85, of Mooers, was driving a 2009 Buick west near 58 Perry Mills Road when he saw four people running along the north shoulder and tried to drive around them.

He said he was unable to avoid hitting Poissant, police said in a news release.

“The subject that was hit was on or near the fog line,” said Bureau of Criminal Investigation Senior Investigator Tracey Eggleston, who is assisting Chazy-based Investigator Richard Hoff with the case.

It appears that the four runners were “side by side,” Eggleston said.

It was unknown Tuesday if Poissant and her three companions were running for recreational purposes or for another reason.

Trombly, alone in the vehicle, was driving home, Eggleston said, and his whereabouts before the accident were still unknown.

Poissant is survived by her husband, Matthew, and three children, said Carrie Bushey of Champlain — she and Ashley were bridesmaids for the wedding of Angela Bechard, who was Ashley’s best friend.

“She was a great mother with three little boys,” Bushey said. “She was fun. She had a great sense of humor.”

Ashley had worked at the McDonald’s restaurant in Champlain for the past six months, Shift Manager Mike Marcellus said, and had been employed there about a year and a half ago for about seven months, also.

She had just been promoted last week, he said.

“She was going to be a fabulous manager,” he said. “It’s tragic what happened.”

He was shocked and saddened to hear about the accident; the McDonald’s general manager had called him at about 8 a.m. Tuesday morning to relay the news.
