Two seats up on Keene School Board

KEENE VALLEY — John Haverlick, Heather Odell and Ann Whitney, an incumbent, are on the ballot Tuesday, competing for two three-year seats on the Keene Central School Board.

James Marlatt, presently board president, chose not to run again.

Here are some of the candidates views on providing quality education while being mindful of the cost to taxpayers:

Odell: “As a mother of two young children, I care deeply about the future of public education.

“My perspective for running for the board is to offer a diverse perspective in forming the district’s vision. I hope to bring a real sense of how state and district policy unfold in the classroom and to offer practical approaches in dealing with new mandates.

“I hope to share sensible cost-saving initiatives that maximize taxpayer dollars and resources. In order to maintain program integrity during uncertain times, it is vital to collaborate and communicate with all shareholders.

“Our children deserve creative solutions that in no way compromise their love of learning and the right to benefit from good teaching practices. My goal is to accentuate the many positive attributes of our district while generating new ideas to strengthen its solid foundation.”

Whitney: “During the past six years, I have learned a great deal about KCS and the community that supports the school. We have faced several challenges and have resolved complex problems.

“This school is a critical part of our community and my life. We have a vested interest in making KCS the best school possible.

“Our school, like many small rural schools, faces difficulties ranging from budgets to providing our students with a well-rounded education.

“We have been proactive and have been consolidating services with neighboring districts. This enables us to keep our budget within the mandated tax cap without losing any staff or programs.”
