LAKE PLACID — A Saranac Lake man suffered a head injury when his flaming car crashed into a tree.
Lake Placid Village Police were conducting a traffic stop at 12:50 a.m. Sunday on Cascade Road when they saw a black Mustang traveling north at a high rate of speed, according to a news release.
“Officers also observed that the interior of the Mustang was engulfed in flames before it crashed into a tree a few hundred feet from where the officers were standing,” the release said.
Officers called fire and EMS units.
The driver, 22-year-old Shawn M. Ellis, was taken to Adirondack Medical Center in Lake Placid with a head injury.
He was treated and subsequently released from Adirondack Medical Center/Lake Placid, officials said Monday.
Charges are now pending against Ellis, police said.
They said “alcohol and/or drugs were a factor in the accident.”
Police were unable to release further details about the crash Monday evening, but said officers were conducting a roadside interview on an unrelated traffic stop when they heard Ellis’s vehicle approaching and spotted flames inside the car.
It was still unclear Monday where the flames originated from.
Authorities expect to release further information about the accident later this week as the investigation continues.
