Off-hill, Whiteface/Lake Placid ranks first again

WILMINGTON — For the 20th year in a row, readers of Ski Magazine have named Whiteface/Lake Placid as the No. 1 destination in the East for off-hill activities. 

Results from the 23rd-annual readers survey appear in the magazine’s October issue.

The article describes events and activities on the State Olympic Regional Development Authority Olympic venues, such as speed skating on the Olympic Oval on Main Street in Lake Placid, a visit to the 1980 Rink Herb Brooks Arena, elevator rides to the top of the 120-meter ski jump and bobsled rides at Mt. Van Hoevenberg.

“This ranking continues to show how much Whiteface/Lake Placid has to offer for skiers and non-skiers alike,” ORDA Chairman Pat Barrett said in a press release. 

“There is so much that separates us from other ski destinations throughout the Northeast, not to mention the shopping and dining opportunities. ... there’s something for everyone, fitting almost every budget.”

Whiteface, Wilmington and Lake Placid also received other high marks among destinations in the East from the magazine’s readers. Scenery, resort dining and après ski all ranked No. 3; respondents put the mountain at No. 7 for challenging terrain; mountain character ranked No. 8; and family programs and overall satisfaction came in at No. 11.


The 2012-13 season at Whiteface is slated to kick off, conditions permitting, on Friday, Nov. 23. New upgrades include the addition of snowmaking to Hoyt’s High Trail, a new Pistenbully 600W groomer and several new low-energy snowmaking guns.

When skiers and riders aren’t on Whiteface’s 86 trails and 3,430 of vertical, they can enjoy the newly renovated Base Camp Market (formerly the Base Camp Café) and Cloudspin Lounge, both located in the mountain’s lodge. Partnering with Centerplate, the Base Camp Market will have a new look to go along with new menus and food choices, including the Black Diamond Burrito and Pinetree Pizza Co. Other areas of the food court include the Firepit Grill, the Lean-To Deli and Backcountry Soups and Chili.
