Point Au Roche Park playground to be renovated

ALBANY — The playground at Point Au Roche State Park will undergo some changes, Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s office announced Thursday.

The recreation space near the lakeside beach popular with boaters and swimmers will get an updated look, according to Cuomo, with modernized playground equipment that includes a multi-platform climbing and sliding structure, swing set, seesaws and a rock climbing wall.

The state Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation will be in charge of building new and renovating existing play areas at three State Parks across the North Country, with $435,000 from the Cuomo’s New York Works Initiative.

“It is important that children have a safe and engaging place to play, and these NY Works projects will give them just that in State Parks across New York,” Cuomo said in a prepared statement. “The numbers tell the story of more and more people visiting the parks, and I encourage everyone to visit these new and improved areas inside the state parks as well as the beauty that New York has to offer.”

Construction work is expected to take place during the cooler, off-season months so that the renovated play space will be open for business by next spring.

Sen. Betty Little is pleased with the announcement and hopes families will flock to the park for fun and exercise.

“Playgrounds are great places for kids to develop self-confidence as they challenge themselves physically,” she said in a news release. “Ensuring they are fun but also safe is obviously very important. I’m certain local families and tourists will appreciate the upgrades at Point Au Roche State Park and I’m pleased to join with Governor Cuomo to announce this award.”

As part of the initiative, the playgrounds will be made accessible to people with disabilities and will have expanded, distinct areas for both younger and older children to play.
