Clinton County OKs deputy hires

PLATTSBURGH — Clinton County legislators agreed to hire up to six new part-time sheriff’s deputies in a move they hope will save them money.

Sheriff David Favro asked for the extra personnel to staff shifts at Plattsburgh International Airport that the county is required to cover.

The airport shifts — many of which are late at night or early in the morning when flights depart and arrive — are now covered by regular full-time deputies on overtime pay.

The service costs the county about $85,000 per year.

Favro said the part-timers will be paid about half of what the full-timers get, and they will receive no benefits.

He is hoping to hire retired law-enforcement personnel for the positions, which would alleviate the need to train and certify them.

Using the part-timers at the airport should save the county between $20,000 and $25,000 annually, Favro said.

Legislators voted in favor of hiring the six new positions but not unanimously.

Legislator Mark Dame (R-Area 8, City and Town of Plattsburgh) opposed the move.

“My problem is that the overtime is to the extent that it is,” Dame said. “We need to address these problems first.”

Dame said government is getting way too expensive and that taxpayers cannot continue to afford paying for all services.

“Maybe we can reduce some services that the Sheriff’s Department provides, services that might be duplicated,” he said.

Favro has told legislators that his department is always looking to keep costs down where they can, but they still are required, by law, to cover the airport.
