PLATTSBURGH — The Clinton County Health Department has issued a boil-water order for the greater Plattsburgh area.
Areas affected include Morrisonville, southeast Beekmantown, Bluff Point, Cliff Haven and PARC, according to a news release from the Clinton County Health Department.
The City of Plattsburgh and Cadyville are not affected, as they are served by separate water districts.
“The boil water order was issued (Thursday) in response to water samples which showed the presence of bacteria,” John Kanoza, director of environmental health at the Clinton County Health Department, said in the release.
Other samples are being collected at numerous locations to determine what caused bacteria to infiltrate the water supply, the Health Department said.
All restaurants and hotels should take these steps until the order is lifted:
Post a copy of the boil water notice so it is visible to customers; notify all employees of the order; discard ice from machines and use commercial bagged ice; take post-mixed soda and other beverage systems out of service and serve bottled drinks only; do not use water to prepare beverages like coffee, tea or lemonade unless the water has been boiled; instead of tap water, use boiled or bottled water to wash all fruit or vegetables; follow normal procedures for washing and sanitizing all utensils and dishes; if preparing ready-to-eat food, use boiled water that has been cooled or bottled water with hand soap.
As far as home use of water goes, tap water is safe for bathing and washing clothes. Household pets can continue drinking tap water since they are usually more tolerant of bacteria but contact a veterinarian with any questions. Owners of fish in aquariums should consult their pet store because of the extra chlorine being added to the water, according to a news release from Clinton County Emergency Management.
Individuals who have symptoms of illness can seek medical attention, the Health Department said.
