25 years – 1988

North Country residents may find themselves cooking with gas if local communities and the New York State Public Service Commission give New York State Electric & Gas Corporation the approvals they need. NYSEG is approaching local governments in the villages of Champlain and Rouses Point, the towns of Champlain, Beekmantown and Chazy and the City of Plattsburgh to ascertain their degree of interest and willingness to grant NYSEG local franchises for natural gas service.

The Adirondack Council of the Boy Scouts of America has saved its national chapter — for now. Getting the council back on its feet and secure financially is going to be a job, according to new Council President Frank Arvay.

Clinton County senior citizens hit another home run: the National Long-Term Care Initiatives Award presented by the National Association of Area Agencies on Aging/Lifeline Systems. The award was presented for exemplary advocacy efforts that have improved the community-based care service delivery system through coordination with traditional health care providers.

A proposal to start the process of legislating an end to Clinton County’s union contract stalemate will be scrapped by county legislators. The resolution would authorize the county to hold a public hearing on the union question, setting the stage for the county board to impose a one-year contract settlement.

The search for “Champ” continues. Kaselaan & D’Angelo, an environmental science and engineering firm, in cooperation with Joseph Zarzynski, founder of the Lake Champlain Phenomena Investigation, will be returning to the Plattsburgh area to resume the search for the mysterious Lake Champlain monster.

50 years – 1963

Two men were killed, one instantly, when their car was struck broadside by a northbound Delaware & Hudson passenger train at a crossing in West Chazy. The Volkswagen beetle in which they were driving was crushed to a third its original width in the horrible crash.
