Woman charged in Saranac Lake homicide

SARANAC LAKE — Ward Guy Wilbur died of blunt-force trauma and stab wounds, authorities say, and Angela Ball faces a second-degree murder charge.

Late Monday night, the Saranac Lake woman, 29, awaited arraignment; Franklin County District Attorney Derek Champagne was requesting she be held without bail.

Saranac Lake Village Police Chief Bruce Nason and two officers responded to a call at 19 Morris Way at about 11 a.m. Monday, where they found Wilbur, 65, dead, a press release from Village Police and Champagne said.

Nason said his department requested State Police assistance on the investigation, and that agency’s Violent Crime Investigative Team and Forensic Investigative Unit responded.

The investigation by both agencies was still in the early stages, the release said.

Police did not say what relationship, if any, he and Ball had.

“Both agencies have allocated significant resources to this investigation,” the release said.

There was a police presence throughout the day at 19 Morris Way, an apartment house of about six units.

Cody McNamara, 19, who lives in one of those apartments, hadn’t known about the incident.

“I came home from work and there were all these cops cars here,” he said as he arrived home from work shortly after 4 p.m.

McNamara said he moved into an upstairs apartment about a month ago and did not know anyone on the ground floor where police were investigating.

Saranac Lake Village Police records show Ball has some criminal history. She was charged on Dec. 20, 2012, with unlawful possession of marijuana after the vehicle she was driving was pulled over for speeding, authorities said.

On May 15 of this year, a report of an erratic driver resulted in Ball’s arrest; she was charged with driving while intoxicated, refusal to take a breath test and unlawful possession of marijuana, a police report says.
