Election commissioner appointments tabled ELIZABETHTOWN — The Essex County Board of Supervisors wants to wait until January before reappointing its two election commissioners.
Republican Commissioner Lewis Sanders and Democratic Commissioner David Mace were up for reappointment this week.
Their part-time salaries pay $16,890 a year each, for two-year terms.
But Supervisor Randy Douglas (D-Jay) said he wanted to wait until Monday's organizational meeting, so both appointments were tabled.
"I need more time," Douglas said.
— By Staff Writer Lohr McKinstry Shipwreck site makes National Register LAKE GEORGE (AP) — The wreck of one of the first gasoline-powered excursion boats in the Adirondacks has been placed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The Forward lies in 40 feet of water near an island on the southern end of Lake George. The 45-foot-long boat was built in 1906 and featured two 30-horsepower engines. It was intentionally sunk in 1930 and discovered by amateur scuba divers in the 1970s.
Bateaux Below, a group of underwater shipwreck preservationists, made the Forward part of a state-administered underwater diving park in Lake George that includes the wrecks of several French and Indian War vessels.
The U.S. Department of the Interior announced this month that the boat has been included on the National Register.
Local counties to get food, shelter funds WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency has awarded New York $12 million for the Emergency Food and Shelter Program.
The program funds are used to supplement food, shelter, rent, mortgage and utility assistance programs for people with non-disaster related emergencies.
Clinton County will receive $61,551; Essex County, $29,562; and Franklin County, $38,185.
"As millions of New Yorkers struggle to cope with a deepening recession, mounting job losses and soaring home foreclosures, these funds will provide critical assistance and an essential safety net for basic sustainable needs," Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton said in a news release.
