PLATTSBURGH — While sitting around the dining-room table indulging in turkey, potatoes and casseroles today, many local people will be giving thanks to their family.

"My friends and family have gotten me through a lot," said 39-year-old Jay Rabideau.

The Plattsburgh resident said this past year has been tough for him due to major health issues with his back, and he's thankful for his family, parents and friends for being there for him.

"If it wasn't for them, I probably wouldn't be here right now."

Rabideau planned to go to his sister's house for Thanksgiving, followed by a late dinner with friends.

TIME TO SEE ALL

John Scafivi, who will be spending Thanksgiving in the United States for the first time in four years, said he has a lot to be thankful for.

Scafivi, who has most recently been in Russia and the Republic of Georgia sharing ideas with fellow language educators, said he often comes home for a week or two in December but usually doesn't have enough time to visit everyone he wants to see. He is thankful he will have that time this year.

The Crown Point man, 63, will be traveling to New Jersey, where he used to live; to Philadelphia to visit his son; and to Canton to see his daughter and two grandsons.

HAPPY FOR LOVE

And while some are thankful to have the freedom to visit family, Ron Bushey, 26, of Plattsburgh said he's thankful he can stay home for the holidays. He planned to spend his Thanksgiving eating a traditional turkey dinner with his girlfriend and mother.

"I'm thankful that love is in the air," he said.

HOME AND FAMILY

Pizza Bono employee Sarah Bechard was also happy to be staying in the area for the holidays and felt most thankful for living in downtown Plattsburgh.

"I really enjoy Plattsburgh, it's a really nice place," said the 20-year-old, who is originally from Peru.

Bechard expected to spend a simple evening with her family today.

HEALTH AND HAPPINESS

Plattsburgh resident Jacqueline Moore said she is thankful for the health of her family and that her sister, Savannah, has been having a good first year of college.

The 15-year-old, who has family flying in from all over the country for a big Thanksgiving dinner, said, "I'm also thankful I have everything I need and want during the holiday season."

FAITH AND FAMILY

Forty-eight-year-old Shelby Trombley is also grateful for her family, with her five grandchildren making the top of the list. "I'm so thankful that I have a very loving and close family. We've had a lot of trials and tribulations and gone through good times together."

Trombley is hosting Thanksgiving dinner at her house this year and is especially looking forward to her daughter visiting from Ohio for the first time in three years and her stepdaughter visiting from Georgia.

"I give God praise for the joy in my heart and the peace that he gives me."
