Smart Seniors consumer
program set for tonight

PLATTSBURGH — A representative from Attorney General Andrew M. Cuomo's Office will speak to area seniors on consumer fraud at 7 tonight at 7 Turner Ave., Plattsburgh.

Glen Michaels, assistant attorney general from the Plattsburgh office, will inform participants how to best avoid consumer scams that frequently target seniors, such as sweepstakes, mail orders and identity theft.

This presentation will also offer information on the kinds of services the Attorney General Office makes available and will explain how seniors can best utilize these resources.

The talk, which is open to all, is part of Cuomo's statewide Smart Seniors Program.

Altona Town Court
canceled today

ALTONA — Altona Town Court is canceled today due to Election Day.

Anyone scheduled to appear is instead due in court on Tuesday, Nov. 17.

Clinton County Youth
Court seeks participants

PLATTSBURGH — The Clinton County Youth Court will be offering its annual training for Clinton County residents.

The Youth Court Program is an opportunity for youths age 13 to 18 to serve as members of a court for young people who have committed offenses in our community.

The goal of Youth Court is to prevent delinquency through positive peer influence. Members develop leadership skills, learn about the justice system and have an opportunity to make a difference in their community.

Membership requires participation in six evening sessions beginning Jan. 7, 2010.

Enrollment is limited. Call 565-4750 for information or to request an Interest Form, which must be submitted to the Clinton County Youth Bureau by Dec. 1.

Ti tax levy up 5 percent for 2010
TICONDEROGA — The Town of Ticonderoga's 2010 tax levy looks like a 5-percent increase over this year.

Supervisor Robert C. Dedrick said spending in the new budget is down over last year's $5.1 million, but revenue is also down.

He said the one-quarter-percent sales-tax increase that Essex County will be sharing with towns and villages next year is what helped keep Ticonderoga's increase down.

"We'd have been looking at major, major cuts without that sales tax."

The public hearing on the new budget is at 5 p.m. Thursday in the Ticonderoga Community Building.
