CHAZY — A quick response by local volunteer firefighters saved a River Street residence from extensive damage Monday night.
Flames began to spread on the front porch of Veronica Rushford’s home around 9 p.m. after electrical wiring apparently sizzled and caught fire.
Chazy Assistant Chief Robert Mesick believes a neighbor spotted the thick, billowing smoke and called 911 after the wiring sparked.
Mrs. Rushford was able to get outside safely as crews from Chazy, West Chazy and Rescue Hose 5 arrived at her residence.
“There were some flames, but they got it out quick,” Mesick said Tuesday.
With some Chazy volunteers only minutes away from the station, crews were able to get to the home quickly and douse the flames before they could spread into the residence, Mesick said.
He said there was minimal damage to the porch and front of the residence.
No one was injured, and Mesick said Mrs. Rushford was not displaced by the blaze.
