25 YEARS AGO -- 1983

As the saying goes, you can't get something for nothing. But that's practically what is happening with Franklin County's Off-Track Betting. As of May, income from the county's two betting parlors -- in Malone and Saranac Lake -- increased $13,261 from last year.

Emergency repairs to Jersey Bridge in the Town of Jay, hamlet of AuSable Forks, are completed. Ice breaking up over the years pushed the main beams up and bent them.

Passengers on an Albany-bound Amtrak train were detained in Plattsburgh about three hours by a derailed Delaware and Hudson engine. The engine went off the track near Bridge and Green streets.

A sudden switch in schools for at least four Beekmantown third-graders has their parents crying foul. The parents claim the move from the Beekmantown Elementary School to Cumberland Head School will force their children to ride the bus twice as long each day, making them lose school time.

50 YEARS AGO -- 1958

Enrollments at public and parochial schools throughout the city and county topped all previous records as they soared to nearly 15,000 for the 1958-59 school year. Last year, more than 13,000 enrolled in city and county schools.

The Common Council votes to increase the pay of all city employees. Most employees will receive a 5-percent boost, but some will get increases of up to 10 percent.

A severe thunderstorm, driven by winds of more than 50 mph, slashes across the North Country, leaving in its wake downed trees and power lines. The storm proves to be more or less a climax of the Labor Day weekend.

Municipal Beach receipts show an increase of $900 this season over those of last year. Receipts total $89,802.

75 YEARS AGO -- 1933

The total attendance at the Municipal Beach for the season of 1933 is recorded at 105,150. That exceeds all previous season records.

Malone's Town Welfare Commission estimates $3,000 worth of vegetables have been raised in the gardens of that village for the needy of that community.

Robert Minich of Tupper Lake, newly elected New York state commander of the American Legion, is accorded an impressive welcome on his return home. Hundreds of residents meet him at the station, accompanied by the Tupper Lake Boys Band and a 24-piece bugle and drum corps.

Joseph Harper, 48, of 59 Cornelia St., Plattsburgh is critically injured when he falls from a roof he was repairing at 13 Stetson Ave.
