PLATTSBURGH -- The 2008 road-construction season is under way.
Motorists should be alert to work-zone speed limits. Fines are doubled for speeding in work zones.
Maintenance crews are doing routine maintenance operations, which include tree work, pothole patching, sign work, short-term bridge repairs, bridge washing, sweeping, ditching, mowing and crack sealing.
Drivers are asked to use caution in work zones to protect the occupants of cars and the highway workers.
Here's a look at some of the major road work being done around the North Country:
CLINTON COUNTY
Silver Lake Road Bridge, Saranac: Construction has begun for the rehabilitation of the bridge adjacent to Route 3. One-lane traffic will be maintained throughout construction. Completion is Nov. 1.
Woods Falls Road, Altona: Paving work continues from Route 11 to Irona Road. Expect delays.
Fiske Road, Chazy: Final resurfacing will be under way mid week. Expect delays.
Davison Road, Mooers: Final resurfacing is in progress. Expect delays.
Route 22, Plattsburgh and Beekmantown: A major reconstruction project is taking place between Route 374 and Haynes Road intersection. Any disruptions in traffic will be controlled by flaggers and signs. Minor delays. Completion is November.
Interstate 87, Chazy and Champlain: Resurfacing project, including some guardrail replacement, is taking place between exits 41 and 42. There may be daily lane closures, with minor delays during working hours. Completion is November.
Interstate 87, Peru to Champlain: Mowing of rights-of-way, cutting trees and other maintenance work will be done between Exit 36 and 43 to the Canadian border. Minor delays.
Route 2, Rouses Point: Drainage improvements and other construction activities will be done between Route 11 and the bridge to Vermont. Traffic will be reduced to one lane at times and will be controlled by flaggers.
Route 374, Dannemora: Drainage improvements will be done from the village to Garden Way (road). Traffic will be reduced to one lane at times and will be controlled by flaggers. Expect delays.
Route 22, Mooers: Paving is under way from Route 11 to Cemetery Street. Traffic will be reduced to one lane at times and will be controlled by flaggers and a pilot vehicle. Motorists are asked to use alternate routes. Some delays.
Route 9N, AuSable: Drainage improvements are being done on Route 9N between Route 9 and Cold Springs Road. Allow for delays.
Route 190, Altona: Mowing and other maintenance activities will be taking place between Atwood and Alder Bend roads. Minor delays.
Route 11, Altona and Ellenburg: Pavement patching along with various construction activities will be taking place from Candlelight Road to Bombard Road. Traffic will be reduced to one lane at times and will be controlled by flaggers and pilot vehicles. Use alternate routes when possible. Expect delays.
Route 22, Peru and Keeseville: Drainage improvements are being done. Traffic, controlled by flaggers, will be reduced to one lane at times. Allow for delays.
Route 442, Peru: Drainage improvements are under way between I-87 and Peru. Traffic will be reduced to one lane at times and will be controlled by flaggers. Some delays.
ESSEX COUNTY
Sunset Drive, Willsboro: Closed, due to road collapse. Crews are working on culverts and shoulders.
Stowersville Road, Lewis: Lane shift near Wardner Bridge, due to slope failure, until repairs can be made.
Witherbee Road, Mineville: Portions of this road are being reconstructed. Some delays.
Boreas Blue Ridge Road, North Hudson: Ditching is taking place. Some delays.
Route 9N, Crown Point and Port Henry: Construction on Route 9N over Putnam Creek and McKenzie Brook construction continues. There is one-way alternating traffic at both locations 24 hours a day.
Lake Champlain Bridge, Crown Point: Maintenance repairs are being done to two piers on the bridge. These repairs involve limited rehabilitation, with the installation of new concrete and steel reinforcement to further protect these piers. This work is expected to take five to seven weeks and short-term lane restrictions are anticipated while the work is being completed.
Route 9N, Westport: Drainage work is being done. Some delays.
Route 86, Lake Placid to Wilmington: Patching is being done. Some delays.
Route 9, North Hudson: Patching is taking place. Some delays.
Route 86, Saranac Lake: Milling and paving will begin after Labor Day from the railroad tracks to River Street. Some delays.
FRANKLIN COUNTY
County Route 35, Chateaugay: Pre-construction activities are taking place. Some delays.
Brand Road Bridge, Malone: Bridge closed for construction work. Tentative completion date: November.
Willow Street Bridge, Malone: Bridge closes Wednesday for a couple of weeks of work.
Route 30, Tupper Lake: This reconstruction project begins in the Village of Tupper Lake and extends south for a distance of about 2.8 miles. Drivers may find one-way traffic controlled by flaggers.
Route 11, Moria: Paving is complete, but work such as shoulder backup is taking place from the St. Lawrence County line to Moria. Minimal delays.
Route 37, Malone: Paving is under way. One-way traffic will be controlled by flaggers and a pilot vehicle. Expect delays.
Routes 11 and 374, Chateaugay and Brainardsville: Noble Wind Project wind-tower construction materials are being brought to the sites. Traffic will be controlled by flaggers when necessary. Minimal delays but motorists should stay alert to these traffic disruptions.
