ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — Gasoline companies would face fines up to $10,000 in New York state for establishing price zones based on demographics under a proposal that passed the Legislature.
The Senate passed the bill Tuesday. The Assembly passed the measure 140-4 in June.
With zone pricing, wholesale prices are higher for retailers in more affluent areas. The sponsors' memo says that means higher pump prices for individuals "who are assumed to be able to pay more."
The bill will now goes to Gov. David Paterson.
The measure would take effect 60 days after the governor signs the bill into law and authorize the attorney general to make emergency rules to implement it.
