Some local readers pick favorite books to loll away a summer

PLATTSBURGH -- You don't need to spend a lot on gas and hotels to experience a pleasant retreat this summer.

For some, a romance, adventure or murder-mystery novel might be enough for an affordable getaway.

Dr. Jean Ann Hunt, assistant professor of literacy education at Plattsburgh State, looks forward to relaxing with a good book during the summer.

"It's always a good time to catch up on reading," she said.

Although most children will be lured to play outdoors, taking the time to read a book can be beneficial, too.

"I think if anybody sits down and reads to, or with, a child, that's kind of a very special time," said Colleen Bessett, education coordinator of Adirondack Community Action Program Head Start in Elizabethtown.

"Certainly what they read is important, but the time spent with the child is what's so great and what makes the reading so fun."

Mayor Donald Kasprzak, who enjoys a political-thriller page-turner, said he makes time to read every day.

"It's important that not only the younger students read but that we all have the enjoyment of reading, and find the time to do it."

The Press-Republican asked a number of local people to give their picks for books to read during the warm months.

Children's Books

Ages 2 to 5

Recommended by Colleen Bessett, education coordinator of APAC Head Start:

"Chicka Chicka Boom Boom" by Bill Martin Jr. and John Archambault. This book, with vivid illustrations and simple narrative, helps young children learn the letters of the alphabet.

"Eating the Alphabet: Fruits and Vegtables from A to Z" by Lois Ehlert. "This story is good for reinforcing the alphabet for kids," Bessett said.
