At a special Adirondack North Country Association Board of Directors' meeting, Donald L. Caldera was appointed to the position of ANCA Board president to succeed outgoing President Ronald Ofner. Ofner will remain a contributing member of the board and has recently been appointed executive director of the Adirondack Regional Tourism Council.
Elected to the ANCA Board in 1999 and board secretary since 2002, Caldera is a Lake Placid resident whose background is as a career manager and entrepreneur with 45 years of corporate experience in acquisitions, development, finance and senior operating posts. Since 1999, he has owned Country Business Services LLC, a Lake Placid affiliate of New England's largest business brokerage group, CBI Inc., and is a licensed real-estate broker.
A native of New YorkÂs Hudson Valley and a Lake Placid homeowner since 1974, Caldera has served as a director of the Mercy Uihlein Healthcare Corp. and the Lake Placid Sinfonietta. He is a New York-licensed real-estate broker and an active and good-standing member of the Northern Adirondack Board of Realtors.
Former Clinton County Administrator William Bingel has been appointed to the Clinton County Industrial Development Agency Board of Directors. He will replace former CVPH Medical Center Vice President Charles Giganto, who left the area to take another hospital job.
Bingel served as county administrator from 1985 to 2004 before retiring.
Six Plattsburgh State faculty members have been honored with State University of New York Chancellor's Awards:
Peter J. Ensel III, Dr. Tracie Church Guzzio and Peter Russom received the Excellence in Teaching Award, given to State University of New York faculty members who have consistently demonstrated superb skill in teaching.
Dr. George Flynn received the Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Scholarship and Creative Activities, which goes to SUNY faculty members who have demonstrated sound and sustained scholarship in the sciences, humanities and professional studies or consistent creative productivity in the fine and performing arts.
Dr. Gary M. Kroll received the award for Excellence in Faculty Service, an honor extended to those faculty members who have a demonstrated record of sustained superior services to a wide range of constituents.
Matthew E. Salvatore received the Excellence in Professional Service Award for SUNY professional service staff who have consistently demonstrated superlative performance within and beyond their position.
The recipients will be honored during the president's opening-day welcome before the start of the fall semester in late August.
Ensel, an associate professor and the chair of the Communications Department, has taught a variety of classes, including television production, electronic media management and writing for television and radio. Responses from these courses indicate that students not only value his knowledge and enthusiasm, they also find his courses challenging and feel that they have learned from them.
Flynn, a professor of mathematics and physics, is an established researcher, especially well-known for his work as an investigator of extraterrestrial material. Among his work is significant research on asteroid strength and the dangers that asteroids can represent to earth.
Committed to helping the public understand such research, he and fellow researcher Dr. Daniel Durda have had this work presented on various networks, including the History Channel, the Canadian Broadcasting Channel and the National Geographic Channel.
Guzzio, an associate professor of English, has taught courses ranging from expository writing, to film and literature, to literary theory and criticism, to the history of Western world literature -- many of which she herself helped to develop. Students who have attended these courses consistently give Guzzio's teaching a high rating. They cite her enthusiasm, availability and respect for students.
